Choosing the right SSL certificate:

  • Every certificate we sell offers 128/256-bit encryption
Every certificate we offer provides the same level of communication security (256-bit on newer browsers). What distinguishes one certificate from another is ease of set-up, browser support, and customer assurance.
  • Thawte is one of the original certificate authorities
Customers are familiar with the Thawte brand and old web browsers include built-in support. If you wish to obtain the highest confidence level, Thawte is the best option.
  • GeoTrust is popular and easy to set up
GeoTrust offers a good combination of ease of set-up and customer assurance.
  • SBS offers lower priced certificates
SBS is a newer provider that offers the same features as competitors for a lower price.
  • A site seal improves confidence
Purchasing a certificate that includes a site seal is a good idea if you plan to do business on your website. A site seal provides third party verification that your site is authenticated and improves buyer confidence.
  • Quick vs. Full vs. Extended Validation
Quick validation means that your certificate can be verified using a simple e-mail-based mechanism. The entire process from start to finish is very quick and can be completed in a matter of hours. Full validation requires a manual verification process that confirms not only that the certificate belongs to a specific domain, but to a specific company/ organization. The entire proces can take days, but provides site visitors with additional assurance. Extended validation (EV) is a more involved process than full validation and is intended to provide the highest levels of customer assurance. New web browsers offer additional cues when a website is using an EV SSL certificate, but the entire process can take a week or more to complete.

What are SSL certificates used for?

  • SSL certificates offer a secure way for a web browser (site visitor) to communicate with web server (site owner).
  • SSL certificates are used for passing sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, personal information, and other confidential information.
  • SSL certificates protect only the communication of information. As a site owner, it is your responsibility to store and/ or process the information securely once it has passed from the web browser to your web server. Webspace Enterprises, Inc. specializes in the secure storage and processing of information. Contact us if you are concerned about the security of your web site.
