What is FTP?
FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is used to copy files to or from your web server. You may want to copy files to your web server if you are adding graphics or a new web page to your website. You may want to copy files from your web server if you are backing up your website.
Where can I get FTP software?
Several popular FTP software packages are listed with direct links:
- FileZilla FileZilla is a popular, free, FTP program available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Click here to download FileZilla
- WinSCP: WinSCP is free software for Windows that also supports Secure FTP for safely transferring files over a wireless connection. WinSCP can be downloaded here
- WS_FTP: WS_FTP is popular commercial software available for Windows. WS_FTP is available for download here
- CuteFTP: CuteFTP is commercial software available for Windows and Mac. CuteFTP can be downloaded here.

I've logged in using FTP, but where are my website files?
Your website files are located in the public_html directory. You may also see a www directory, which simply mirrors your public_html directory (you do not need to download files from both directories).
